The Real Reasons Behind Visa Rejections

A visa is one of the most important documents you’ll need when traveling abroad. Whether for tourism, school, work or joining a foreign spouse, a visa is usually part of the requirement. However, some countries do not require visitors from other countries to have a visa due to special cooperation between the two countries.

For example, Indonesian citizens traveling to Thailand for a holiday can enter without a visa, as long as the stay does not exceed 30 days by air or 15 days by land.

Common Reasons a Visa Application Gets Rejected

Different types of visas are issued by countries depending on the traveler's purpose. One example is the Visa on Arrival (VoA), which can be obtained directly at the airport upon arrival. Nowadays, many countries also offer VoA in an electronic form, which can be applied for online.

However, many destinations still require travelers to apply for a visa before departure. This applies to Indonesians planning to visit countries like Japan, those in Europe, the United States, and others. Unfortunately, getting a visa is not always a smooth process. Some travelers end up having to delay or cancel their trip due to a rejected visa application.

Why does this happen? Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons:

  • Financial Stability

No fixed formula guarantees your financial status will meet the requirements for a visa. But many countries do follow an informal calculation. For instance, if the estimated cost of living per day in a country is IDR 1,000,000, then your account should reflect:

IDR 1,000,000 x the total number of days you plan to stay.

This is just a reference. If your savings are too close to the minimum, your application may still be rejected. Visa officers want to be sure that you can support yourself throughout the trip.

Also, a visa application may be rejected if your account shows a sudden and large transfer of funds. It is better to show a stable and consistent financial history that does not raise any concerns.

  • Reason for Travel

Some countries will ask you to explain the purpose of your visit clearly. This helps them determine whether or not the visa type you’re applying for is appropriate and also confirms that you intend to return to your home country after your trip. Be sure to provide a clear and convincing explanation to avoid any doubts or confusion.

  • Incomplete Documents

As with any official process, applying for a visa requires supporting documents. Always double-check that you have provided all the required files, in the correct format and quality, especially if the application is submitted online. Clear, legible, and properly formatted documents will help avoid delays or rejections.

  • Travel Itinerary and Accommodation

Even though immigration officers won’t track your every move, a complete itinerary and confirmed accommodation details show that you have prepared well for your journey. Make sure that your travel plan is filled out from the day you arrive until the day you return. Avoid leaving any dates blank, even if it’s just one day. If you plan to stay at a relative’s home, ask them to write a letter confirming your stay and include their contact details.

  • Travel Insurance

Overseas travel insurance isn’t just about protection. Some countries require proof of Travel insurance before they approve your visa application. In many cases, there are even specific insurance conditions that you must meet.

Now you know what might cause a visa application to be rejected. With this knowledge, you can prepare better and increase your chances of getting approved without any issues. Keep in mind that some countries may also have additional requirements for visa applications, depending on your nationality or purpose of visit. It is always a good idea to research these conditions in advance. Enjoy your trip!
