When talking about tourist destinations in Bali, places like Kuta, Ubud or Nusa Dua usually come to mind. However, there's one destination that tourists shouldn’t miss: Penglipuran Village. You might've heard of it before, but haven't really looked into what makes this village special. Or maybe, this is your first time hearing about it?
This village may not be as famous as the ones we mentioned earlier, but it's just as amazing as any other destination in Bali. Curious about what fun activities you can do in Penglipuran Village? Check out the list below!
Penglipuran Village is located in Bangli Regency, East Bali, around 43 kilometers or a 2-hour drive from Denpasar. If you're traveling from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, you can take a rental transportation for a practical and cheaper option.
This village has existed since the Bangli Kingdom era, around 700 years ago. The name 'Penglipuran' is derived from the words pengeling (to remember) and pura (the land of ancestors). Legend said that the village was founded by people from Bayung Gede Village in Kintamani, who settled in the Kubu area. That's why this village was once known as Kubu Bayung Village, meaning 'the Bayung people who stopped by in Kubu area.'
The villagers then formed their own community and built the Kahyangan Tiga temples: Pura Penataran, Pura Puseh and Pura Dalem. The village layout follows the Tri Mandala concept: Utama Mandala (sacred area), Madya Mandala (residential area) and Nista Mandala (cemetery area).
Aside from watching traditional ceremonies and snapping photos in front of the temples, there are plenty of other fun activities you can try!
Just outside the village, you can find a lush and refreshing bamboo forest. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a bit of light exercise or snapping some aesthetic shots for your feed. Remember to keep it clean!
Loloh Cemcem is a traditional drink made from cemcem leaves—refreshing and healthy, much like herbal tea. On the other hand, Tipat Cantok is a dish of rice cakes served with boiled vegetables and peanut sauce—its savory flavor is a true taste of Bali!
Tourists are welcome to stop by or even spend a night at local homes. People of Penglipuran are known for their warmth and openness, allowing you to experience the family-like atmosphere typical of Balinese villages.
This village is home to many bamboo craftsmen. You can learn to make woven items, trinkets, or bamboo wall decorations as unique souvenirs.
Some temples in this village are open to tourists, especially in the southern area, such as Pura Penataran. However, always remember to wear respectful and appropriate outfit and adhere to local rules-such as women on their period being prohibited from entering the temple area.
Before entering Penglipuran Village, visitors are required to purchase an entrance ticket. Here is the ticket price list for 2025:
The ticket price already includes access to all village areas and public facilities.
So, that wraps up our short dive into the story and appeal of Penglipuran Village. Despite being a humble village, Penglipuran has already drawn crowds of both local and international tourists.
