Getting to Know the Types of Rest Areas along Highways and Toll Roads

Rest areas are public resting places that are located along highways or toll roads. Aside from providing a break from travel fatigue, these locations offer amenities for refueling vehicles. Here are the types of rest areas you can find along highways and toll roads during your upcoming “mudik”, or travel back to your hometown for the Eid holidays!

Type A

Type A rest areas are the largest, characterized by their extensive facilities and spacious areas. Facilities offered in these rest areas include Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), toilets, gas stations, clinics, convenience stores, prayer rooms (or mosques), workshops, parking lots, gardens, and restaurants.

According to Public Works and Public Housing Minister’s Regulation Number 10 of 2018 on Rest and Service Areas Along Toll Roads (PWPH Minister’s Regulation No. 10/2018), at least one Type A rest area should be available for every 50 kilometers in each direction. Additionally, a Type A rest area should be at least 20 kilometers away from the next Type A rest area and at least 10 kilometers away from the next Type B rest area.

On the eastbound Trans-Java Toll Road (leaving Jakarta), you can find Type A rest areas at the following locations:

  • KM 42 and KM 68 on the Tangerang–Merak Toll Road
  • KM 13 on the Jakarta–Tangerang Toll Road
  • KM 7 on the Pondok Aren–Serpong Toll Road
  • KM 10 and KM 45 on the Jagorawi Toll Road
  • KM 19 and KM 40 on the Jakarta–Cikampek Toll Road
  • KM 102 and KM 166 on the Cikampek–Palimanan Toll Road
  • KM 207 on the Palimanan–Kanci Toll Road
  • KM 228+300 on the Kanci–Pejagan Toll Road
  • KM 379 on the Batang–Semarang Toll Road
  • KM 429+300 on the Semarang–Solo Toll Road
  • KM 519 on the Solo–Ngawi Toll Road
  • KM 626+200 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 725 on the Mojokerto–Surabaya Toll Road
  • KM 13+500 on the Surabaya–Gresik Toll Road
  • KM 26 A on the Surabaya–Gempol Toll Road
  • KM 792+800 on the Gempol–Pasuruan Toll Road

For westbound travel (towards Jakarta), Type A rest areas can be found at these locations:

  • KM 14 on the Jakarta–Tangerang Toll Road
  • KM 21 and KM 38 on the Jagorawi Toll Road
  • KM 101 and KM 164 on the Cikampek–Palimanan Toll Road
  • KM 208+400 on the Palimanan–Kanci Toll Road
  • KM 229 on the Kanci–Pejagan Toll Road
  • KM 260 and KM 282 on the Pejagan–Pemalang Toll Road
  • KM 319 on the Pemalang–Batang Toll Road
  • KM 389 on the Batang–Semarang Toll Road
  • KM 519 on the Solo–Ngawi Toll Road
  • KM 626+200 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 726 on the Mojokerto–Surabaya Toll Road
  • KM 25 on the Surabaya–Gempol Toll Road
  • KM 792+800 on the Gempol–Pasuruan Toll Road

Type B

Type B rest areas are the second-largest after Type A rest areas. Facilities in these rest areas include ATMs, toilets, convenience stores, prayer rooms, and restaurants. However, However, these locations have no gas stations, clinics, or workshops.

Under PWPH Minister’s Regulation No. 10/2018, Type B rest areas should be present on intercity toll roads with lengths exceeding 30 kilometers and be at least 10 kilometers apart from each other.

On the eastbound Trans-Java Toll Road (leaving Jakarta), you can find Type B rest areas at these locations:

  • KM 36 on the Jagorawi Toll Road
  • KM 33 on the Jakarta–Cikampek Toll Road
  • KM 86 and KM 130 on the Cikampek–Palimanan Toll Road
  • KM 252, KM 275, KM 287, and KM 294 on the Pejagan–Pemalang Toll Road
  • KM 338 and KM 344 on the Pemalang–Batang Toll Road
  • KM 391+400 on the Batang–Semarang Toll Road
  • KM 456 and KM 487 on the Semarang–Solo Toll Road
  • KM 538 and KM 575 on the Solo–Ngawi Toll Road
  • KM 597+800 and KM 640 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 678 and KM 695 on the Kertosono–Mojokerto Toll Road
  • KM 819+200 and KM 833+200 on the Pasuruan–Probolinggo Toll Road

Meanwhile, for westbound travel (towards Jakarta) on the Trans-Java Toll Road, you can find Type B rest areas at these locations:

  • KM 86 on the Cikampek–Palimanan Toll Road
  • KM 344 on the Pemalang–Batang Toll Road
  • KM 429, KM 456, and KM 487 on the Semarang–Solo Toll Road
  • KM 538 and KM 575 on the Solo–Ngawi Toll Road
  • KM 597+800 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 678 and KM 695 on the Kertosono–Mojokerto Toll Road
  • KM 819+200 and KM 833+200 on the Pasuruan–Probolinggo Toll Road

Type C

Type C rest areas are the smallest of the three types of rest areas. Facilities in these rest areas include toilets, kiosks, prayer rooms, and parking lots. No ATMs, gas stations, clinics, convenience stores, workshops, gardens, and restaurants are available at these locations.

In terms of distance, according to PWPH Minister’s Regulation No. 10/2018, a Type C rest area should be 2 kilometers away from Type A, Type B, and other Type C rest areas. Type C rest areas are only operational during long holidays and around Eid or Christmas and New Year holidays.

On the eastbound Trans-Java Toll Road (leaving Jakarta), you can find Type C rest areas at these locations:

  • KM 338 on the Pemalang–Batang Toll Road
  • KM 640 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 792+800 on the Gempol–Pasuruan Toll Road

Meanwhile, for westbound travel (towards Jakarta) on the Trans-Java Toll Road, you can find Type C rest areas at these locations:

  • KM 319 on the Pemalang–Batang Toll Road
  • KM 640 on the Ngawi–Kertosono Toll Road
  • KM 792+800 on the Gempol–Pasuruan Toll Road
